What Freud Can Teach Us About Saab Ignition Key Replacement

Saab Key Programming

Saab cars made since 1994 come with an immobilizer system built on coded keys. The addition of a key requires the purchase of a new transponder as well as special programming. This is usually done by the dealer, using a specially-designed Tech2 diagnostic tool.

The problem is that this could be very expensive. This is why you should always have a spare key on hand.

Transponder key

The transponder is a type of key with an electronic chip. The chip sends a signal when the key is put in the ignition. The car is able to check if the signal matches the one on the key. If the signals are identical the car will then unlock itself and start. This is a great way to deter car theft and keep your car safe from thieves.

Transponder keys can be an extremely popular accessory for cars, but they're not as safe as traditional keys made of metal. While the metal component of a traditional key may be cut and copied but a transponder key is protected by an electronic chip. This chip contains an individual code that is encoded into the car's system to identify it.

The car will recognize the Saab keyfob and allow it to turn on. However, it will only do this if the key fob has a non-modified chip that has been programmed to match it. The car won't start if the key is not programmed to match.

It is important to have an extra Saab key. This is especially true if you reside in a rural region that has numerous car thieves. The good thing is that you can obtain a replacement key for your Saab without having to go to a dealer and pay the high prices that they charge. In the majority of cases, you can have a brand new key made right on the spot at a fraction of the cost you'd pay at an auto dealer.

Key for Wired

Saab cars are usually supplied with two keys. If you own only one, you should get an additional key as fast as you can. This is because, if it's lost the car will require a new CIM and the locking cylinders replaced. This can be expensive especially for cars that are used.

The next step is to wire the row and column wires to the microcontroller. This is the most challenging part of the project and will require a great amount of soldering. There's no standard way to accomplish this, but it is essential to determine the way you'll route and solder the columns and rows. For this keyboard, there are 5 rows and 17 columns, so there will be 22 microcontroller pins and wires to connect.

After the rows and column are soldered together, it is time to connect the key switches. Solder a diode to each key switch pin. This will protect the pins from current and prevent them from getting shorted. A diode lets current only flow in one direction.  The Keylab  is equipped with a visible indicator, a black band, that shows the direction in which the current will flow.

Some of the tools available at auto parts stores -- such as the Autel MaxiIM IM608 Pro and IM508 -- could assist customers at the shop or DIY users in some cases programme replacement keys and recover the lost immobilizer's data, Sanabria says. The tools plug into the OBD port and automatically guide the customer through the procedure, making it much easier than replacing the computer in the vehicle.

Jump-starting the battery

A lot of people keep a set of jumper cables in their trunk for emergency situations, but jumping a battery for newer automobiles might not be the best choice. These cars are equipped with a variety of computers and digital devices which communicate with each other. A voltage spike when batteries are connected to another battery could damage the components, rendering your car undriveable.

Start the working vehicle and let it run for about two minutes before you connect the cables to the disabled one. Attach the red clip to the positive terminal of the good battery (it will have "POS" or "+" on it). Attach the other end of the black cable to an unpainted, clean metal surface beneath the damaged car's hood. The engine block is an ideal choice. The black cable should not be connected to the negative terminal of the dead battery. This could trigger sparks, which would ignite the gasoline in the engine compartment.

Once the cables are connected, you can begin the car and let it run for approximately five minutes. Then, disconnect them in reverse. Be aware that the battery of your Saab 9-3 is recharged when you drive, so it will take a while for the battery to come back to its original level. You should invest in a second key fob, as soon as possible. The replacement of the one that works requires the installation and programming of a brand new computer chip.

Replacement case

Many Saab owners have only one key for their vehicle and if they lose that the cost will be. It's expensive to add a key and requires replacing the CIM or TWICE in the case of older models. It's recommended to have a second key in case of theft or any other catastrophe and the most effective way is to purchase a second key as soon as you are able to. Don't purchase a used key even if it's "new." Keys that are claimed as new from a second-hand store will not work and are likely to fail in the crucial moment.

The dealer will charge the highest dollar if you only have one working key. However, we can reset and re-program your computer's EEPROM in order to prepare it to accept the new key, without replacing the entire system. This can save you a significant amount of money. It's also much less expensive than waiting until you lose your one key.
